Before his show at Tijuana Innovamoda started, I had no idea who Emedel García was. A friend had to let me know he had won runner up at ELLE México Diseña this year. But I then remembered a couple of dresses from the collection used in an editorial shoot for a friend’s upcoming magazine. They weren’t exactly my style, but I could admire the craftsmanship, taste and detail. Things were looking up.  

Unfortunately, as the first look walked down the runway, the audience’s glances didn’t turn to the dress, but to the model’s hair. Exaggerated. Too much. Unnecessary. You name it, I thought it. Three pony-tail-like balls of hair didn’t flatter the dresses –or anything or by themselves, for that matter. The whole collection seemed flawless (or at least from afar) and the hair style stole the attention from it. 

But with that said, the styling was the only low point in García’s show for everything else was breathtaking. The details. Oh, the details. Especially the spiked applications over the chiffon bodice part of a white evening gown –my favorite. You could easily tell the time spent on them and the talent García has. The color palette consisted of soft, neutral colors with the occasional pop of bolder shades, such as orange. The overall look reminisced of more romantic and feminine times, although I couldn’t place the collection in a specific point in time.

Ignoring the styling, Emedel García’s collection was by far the best of the night. It was innovative yet wearable.

Antes de su pasarela en Tijuana Innovamoda, no tenía idea de quien era Emedel García. Un amigo me tuvo que decir que el diseñador había ganado el segundo lugar en el concurso de ELLE México Diseña este año. Después recordé un par de vestidos de la colección que fueron usados en un editorial para la revista de un amigo. No eran exactamente mi estilo, pero podía admirar los detalles y el buen gusto. Las cosas comenzaban bien.     

Desafortunadamente, al salir caminando el primer look por la pasarela, las miradas del público no iban hacia el vestido, si no al peinado de la modelo. Exagerado. Demasiado. Innecesario. Todo eso y más pensé. Las tres colitas en como bolas de cabello no iban con los vestidos –o con lo que fuera. Toda la colección se veía perfecta (o mínimo de lejos) y los peinados solo le robaban atención a los vestidos.  

Pero ya dicho eso, el styling fue lo único malo en el show de García, pues lo de más era maravilloso. Los detalles, Oh, los detalles. Especialmente las aplicaciones de picos  sobre el vestido de noche blanco –mi favorito. Se notaba el tiempo dedicado y talento del diseñador. La paleta de colores consistió en colores neutrales con el ocasional brote de colores más resaltantes como el naranja. El look de la colección recordaba tiempos más románticos y femeninos, aunque no la podía colocar en un específico punto en el tiempo.

Ignorando el styling, la colección de Emedel García fue la mejor de la noche, ya que fue innovadora y a la vez comerciable.

My experience at Tijuana Innovamoda on Oct. 14 started out badly. I arrived late, missing the cocktail party. The staff had me running all over the venue, Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT), in heels looking for the press accreditation booth. The lady at said booth, once found, looked me and my friends up and down and said, “You’re press?” Maybe it was my teal baroque print dress and faux leather jacket or my guy friend’s pleated black skirt and leggings or his date’s denim short shorts and Jeffrey Campbell’s Stinger Spike platforms, but one thing was for sure: Tijuana has no notion of fashion bloggers. Or fashion, for that matter. But after getting accredited and running into some friends, I felt willing to put the unpleasant moments behind and a reasonably priced bottle of bubbly inside.  

After an intro consisting of a few dancers and acrobats, the shows finally started. First up, Louis Verdad. Images of Madonna and her various music videos played on the walls of CECUT’s theater behind the stage, projected from somewhere near La Bola, the IMAX theater.

The show began at the highest of highs. An all-black ensemble of a sheer burka with high waist shorts and triangle top was so good for being so culturally contradicting. Hands down, my favorite look all night. Finally, something innovative, I naively thought. But then, the show took the attendees on a rollercoaster ride –or at least my group of critics friends and I. 

The styling fitted the Madonna inspired collection. The models sported high pony tails, dark and heavy makeup and red strands of hair falling on their faces. Sure, I saw some Madonna in there, but I mostly saw Cosplay and typical Goth more than anything. Thigh high boots, dresses held together by three or four belts, a black, red and white color palette? C’mon. As for the evening gowns, they were too Mortal Kombat than Erotica for my taste and view. The truth is, the collection confused me, for I didn’t know whether it was spring/summer or fall/winter (somebody please relieve me of this doubt).

However, I did like selected pieces, such as the high waist lace shorts and the burka. Similarly, the styling was impeccable, but that’s it. The collection was edgy and racy compared to the other three (which I shall also write about) but left standing alone, one wished for more. Even though Louis Verdad has dressed artists like Miss Britney Spears and Madonna herself in the past, this collection wasn’t his best.

Mi experiencia en Tijuana Innovamoda empezó mal. Llegue tarde y por consecuente, me perdí del cocktail party. El staff me tuvo corriendo en tacones por todo el Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT) buscando el booth para acreditarme como prensa. La señora en el booth, una vez encontrado, nos “barrió” a mis amigos y a mi y dijo, “¿Ustedes son prensa?” Tal vez era mi vestido verde azulado con estampado barroco y mi chaqueta de faux leather o la falda con plisados negra y leggings de mi amigo o los short shorts de mezclilla y las plataformas Stinger Spike de Jeffrey Campbell que llevaba su acompañante, pero una cosa era segura: Tijuana no tiene noción de los bloggers de moda. O de la moda en general. Pero después de haberme acreditado y encontrarme con algunos amigos, me sentí con la capacidad de dejar los momentos desagradables atrás y una botella de champagne a dentro.     

Después de una intro con bailarines y acróbatas, las pasarelas al fin comenzaron. El primero, Louis Verdad. Desde algún lugar en La Bola, el teatro de IMAX, se proyectaron imágenes y videos musicales de Madonna, desplegadas en las paredes del teatro del CECUT detrás del escenario. 

La pasarela no pudo haber empezado mejor. El look de la burka negra transparente con los shorts high waist y el top de triángulos fue tan bueno por ser tan contradictorio culturalmente. Sin duda alguna, mi look favorito de toda la noche. Al fín, algo innovador, pensé ingenuamente, ya que lo que le siguió nos llevo a los asistentes en una montaña rusa –o tan siquiera a mi grupo de críticos amigos y a mí.  

El styling quedaba bien con la colección inspirada por Madonna. Las modelos portaban el cabello en una cola alta, maquillaje obscuro y mechones rojos. Claro, había algo de Madonna por ahí, pero yo vi más Cosplay y Goth que cualquier otra cosa. ¿Botas negras thigh high, vestidos con tres o cuatro cintos, la paleta de colores negra, blanca y roja? Por favor. En cuanto a los vestidos de noche, me parecieron más Mortal Kombat que Erotica. La verdad es que la colección me confundió, ya que no sabia si era primavera/verano o invierto/otoño (alguien sáqueme de la duda).  

Sin embargo, si me gustaron algunas piezas, tales como los shorts high waist de encaje y la burka. El styling, también, estuvo impecable, pero es todo. La colección, comparada con las tres otras (de las cuales también escribiré), estuvo edgy, pero dejo mucho a desear por si sola. Puede que Louis Verdad haya vestido a artistas como Britney Spears y la mismísima Madonna en el pasado, pero esta colección no fue su mejor.
